Sustainability in practice at Therme Wien
Preserve. Relax. Experience.
Welcome to Therme Wien, the largest and most state-of-the-art urban spa in Europe, which has been easily accessible by public transport since 2017. It’s just ten stops on the U1 underground line from the Stephansplatz transport hub to the Oberlaa station – a sustainable journey that’s being taken by more and more spa guests each year.
A sought-after destination, right from the start
In 2008, Therme Wien became part of VAMED Vitality World. Construction of the new building took just under two years, and even then, the principle of “give and take” was already in place. Water and energy are consumed, but every effort is made to use these previous resources responsibly and establish sustainable cycles wherever technically possible.
Since its reopening in 2010, ongoing investments have focused on sustainability. Thanks to geothermal energy and heat pumps, Therme Wien generates its own heat, even when outside temperatures drop to freezing. During peak loads, additional heating requirements are covered by district heating. Since 2022, Wien Energie has been converting the waste heat from thermal processes into district heating.
Extensive collaboration
When the in-house photovoltaic system on the roof of the spa complex went into operation in 2024 as part of the climate partnership between Wien Energie and Therme Wien, there was great excitement in the building – 820,000 kilowatt hours now flow directly into the power supply of the spa resort. This is another major step forward in sustainable energy management. Heat pumps and the PV system save 400 tons of CO2 – equivalent to 170 flights from Vienna to Tokyo. Quite a reduction!
Urban nature, smart energy and sweet rewards
The “Smartflower” in front of the building adjusts its solar panels to track the sun and closes them at sunset – a symbol of nature's efficiency. The spa garden behind the building, featuring over 900 trees and hundreds of plants, showcases how biodiversity can thrive in a large city. Our in-house “Thermengold” organic honey, which comes from five beehives, offers a delicious testament to this.
People at the center
Since 2019, Therme Wien has been putting people at the center. The program was developed together with existing employees and has been implemented consistently since then. Work-life balance, such as a four-day week or above-average flexibility in shift scheduling and vacation planning, is now standard practice.
Last year, these efforts earned the government's “Work and Family” seal of approval, awarded only to companies with exceptionally family-friendly personnel practices.
Shaping the future together, with confidence
Therme Wien’s ongoing investment in attractive work areas, and its commitment to training at least two to three apprentices each year is further proof of how seriously we approach our social responsibility. In cooperation with the organization “Jugend am Werk” (Youth at Work), Therme Wien also supports teenagers and young adults with learning difficulties or disabilities in integrating into the regular job market. This is a meaningful contribution in challenging times, which demonstrates our genuine commitment to sustainability at all levels.
