At the transition of the Alps to the Hungarian lowlands one finds Neusiedler See, Central Europe’s only steppe lake. The lake offers ideal wind conditions for sailing and windsurfing. The adjoining seemingly endless plain, the Puszta, with the various “Lacken” (saltwater pools), offers the perfect habitat for millions of birds on their yearly migration flights to the south. The National Park Neusiedler See – Seewinkel is not only home to an unusual and rare plant life but to big cattle herds in order to preserve and uphold the natural landscape.
The most eastern province of Austria is a popular holiday region.
This region offers numerous possibilities for “recharging empty batteries”, whether nature, culture, sport, wine or the culinary specialties.

Its aim is the long-term preservation of habitats for a wide variety of bird and plant life at the point where the Alps meet the Euro-Asiatic plains. It was recognized by the IUCN in 1993.
